Page One

Panel One: Exterior. Day. A dense forest. Sunlight filters down from the sky, shining brightly down through the trees, illuminating a woodland path. LITTLE RED RIDING HOOD is skipping down the path. She looks to be about seven or eight, with black pigtails, a gingham dress and pinafore. She wears frilly ankle socks and Mary Janes and carries a basket swinging from one arm, which has a handkerchief tucked in around its contents so that we can't see them. Her little red cloak looks a little bit too big for her, but she's the absolute picture of innocence. Squirrels and rabbits, like gooey eyed Disney movie rejects are watching her as she goes. There's a small clump of bushes that are slightly darker and more sinister looking than the surrounding foliage that she's about to pass.

Panel Two: Closer in on the dark bushes. Red Riding Hood is passing them. A pair of beady, shining black eyes are watching her intently from the shadows as she goes. This is our first glimpse of the WOLF.

Panel Three: Same perspective as last panel. Red Riding Hood is even further past the bushes and the wolf is licking his lips hungrily. All we see is his tongue, swiping from one side to the other.

SFX: Slurp!

Panel Four: Medium frontal shot of Red. She's stopped in her tracks in front of the bushes. She looks very awkward, standing still in mid-skip, one leg in the air, one leg on the ground. She's looking toward the bush suspiciously, but her head isn't turned. It's like she's frozen and only her eyes can move.

Panel Five: The wolf leaps out from the bushes at Red! He's pretty menacing, looking more like a horror movie monster than a regular old wolf. Leaves fly every which way. Red has her arms up to shield herself, her little basket gone flying, the small piece of cloth tucked over the goodies dislodged.

Panel Six: Red is running from the wolf, him close at her heels. Her arms are outstretched, her hood is off her head and her cloak is flying wildly behind her as she tries to make her escape.

Panel Seven: Close up. The wolf's teeth have clamped down on Red's cloak as she runs!

Page Two

Panel One: Red is reaching behind herself to wrench the fabric free of the wolf's teeth. She hasn't turned back toward the wolf as she does this, she's still looking toward us. She looks absolutely desperate.

Panel Two: Red has pulled free of the wolf, a piece of her cloak hanging in the bewildered animal's mouth. She's running toward us with all her might.

Panel Three: Close up, reaction shot. Red is standing still and looks stunned. In the next panel, it will be revealed that she's hit a dead end.

Panel Four: From behind Red. She stands in front of a massive stone wall. All around her, the underbrush is thick and there's nowhere to run.

Panel Five: Red is looking back over her shoulder. The wolf is there, taking up almost the entire panel, looking triumphant.

Panel Six: From above Red, looking down at her, as if we're the wolf, towering over the little girl. She's backed up against the wall, hands pressed against the stone, her little red cloak in tatters. A shadow has fallen over her and she looks as though she's going to cry.

Panel Seven: Close up. Red has squeezed her eyes shut and turned her head aside, tears spilling down her cheeks.

Panel Eight: In profile and in silhouette we see Red cowering as the wolf leaps through the air to attack.

Page Three

Panel One: Worm's eye view. In the foreground, we see Red's basket of goodies lying abandoned. The handkerchief is off to one side, crumpled. The basket still retains its contents, though. A black bottle with a white label that's half peeled off as well as a couple of chocolate cupcakes.

Panel Two: Same perspective as last panel. A chipmunk has entered the shot, sniffing at one of the cupcakes suspiciously.

SFX: Sniff, sniff

Panel Three: Same perspective as last panel. The chipmunk has reached out with one paw and is poking at the cupcake.

Panel Four: Same perspective as last panel. The chipmunk has descended on the cupcake and is stuffing its face.

Panel Five (inset): Close up of the chipmunk. It's stopped eating and is looking at us like a deer caught in the headlights.

Panel Six (inset): The chipmunk is choking to death, it has its paws wrapped around its throat.

Panel Seven: Same perspective as the first four panels. The chipmunk has fallen over dead next to the basket of goodies and there's a pair of Mary Janes in the shot.

Page Four

Panel One: Medium shot. Red stands in the forest, looking a little worse for wear as she leans over and picks up her basket of goodies.

Panel Two: Closer in on Red. She looks directly at us, intentionally breaking the fourth wall. She looks a little blank.

Panel Three: Same perspective as last panel. Red's mouth is open and she's letting out one hell of a belch. A bone is in mid-air that she's obviously just cartoonishly burped up.

SFX: BUUUUUUUURP!

Panel Four: Red looks at us, smiling and sheepish, her little hand covering her mouth.

Panel Five: Worm's eye view. In the background, Red is skipping away in silhouette. In the foreground, the dead chipmunk and the white label from the bottle that was in her basket of goodies lay. The label has a skull and crossbones depicted on it.

Author's Comments

This short script was written for King Tractor Press for a charity 'Fairy Tales' anthology to benefit the Comic Book Legal Defense Fund. I had an artist attached to it and the guy running KTP likes the script itself and said he can't wait to see the finished product, but the artist has gone AWOL in the past couple of weeks. Hopefully, things will work out, but if they don't, I'll just find a new artist.

If things go according to plan, you might see me in print by next year :)
